It's Not Just Fluff

Fundamentals of Engagement

What's the story?

The Why- I've always seen the importance of engaging students in meaningful learning with real world connections, while still having fun. Over the past 5 years, I've really invested time in researching, planning and executing highly engaging, yet effective. I've strived to be a teacher who goes above and beyond for my scholars. I've always loved school and learning and always try to plan lessons so that my students will also love learning. I noticed that the feedback I've gotten from colleagues or administrators has been been mainly positive, but often accompanied with questions of "HOW DO I DO THAT TOO?". Here I am thinking that some teachers were lazy or just did the bare minimum but actually, some just didn't know where to start. Students around the country and especially where I teach are pre-occupied with life issues and often come to school as an escape. It is our job to fully engage our students everyday in real world lessons that incorporate a zest for learning.  On the other hand, some teachers and administrators often called what I did in my classrooms as a waste of time or "fluff" but I noticed that because I planned engaging lessons everyday and room transformations often, my attendance went up, my test scores improved and my classroom culture was the very best. Students were excited to come to school and felt a part of their learning. I'm hoping to plan a professional learning that teaches teachers how to look through the lens of engagement and fun to teach meaningful real world lessons that leaves their scholars thirsty for more each day.

The How-  I choose to create my elevator pitch using an infographic. I wanted to use a quick, yet precise presentation method. Often times, administrators don't have enough time to review material, so I've found "one-pagers" are best for me to communicate my ideas. Using an infographic, it allows for my communication to have depth and be engaging while simultaneously providing necessary information to obtain permission to facilitate this professional learning. I chose to include statistics for engagement, a quick introduction, and a plan on how this professional learning series will be conducted over time.
