Ive always been interested in technology and gadgets growing up but I never knew you could make a career out of it. Growing up, there wasn't vast resources to teach about different careers outside of the standard, teacher, lawyer, doctor. I was lucky to grow up in a household where all of my interests and hobbies were supported but my parents were busy with work often that they didn't have time to explore different hobbies that the thought would interest me.
................Fast Forward........
Every year, I try to plan career day for my students that is representative of them. I am lucky to teach black and brown students and I take this job serious. Representation matters. Did you know only 25% of the technology field is occupied by women in yet we make up 47% of all of the workfield. Of that 25% only 3% are Black women.
3%
That is a triggering statistic. I can only imagine how hard it is to infiltrate a system that shows us, statistically that we don't belong. The state of the country is so disheartening, so I'm not sure why this is so triggering to me because system racism, sexism and implicit biases are real. So shout out to the Esosa Ighodaro,Camille Hearst, and Jasmine Lawrence's of the world! May we be them, raise them and teach them!
